An adolescent who engages in defiant behaviour such as wearing ‘outrageous’ clothes, coming home very late and leaving his or her room untidy may be seen as attempting to establish his or her own personal identity. This interpretation of the adolescent’s behaviour is one that could be seen as plausible by all parties. The parental intervention could recognise that the adolescent’s behaviour is positive in that the adolescent is striving to become autonomous but that it is excessive in relation to achieving that goal.
